Conference Details

Austin Child Guidance Center is convening the second Cross-Discipline Trauma  Conference of Central Texas, a regional training conference on trauma and trauma-informed care. This two day conference brings together over 650 professionals and organizations in Central Texas that work with children and young adults; including mental health clinicians,  physicians, school personnel, medical/nursing professionals, law enforcement, juvenile  justice professionals, and occupational/physical therapists. The conference will provide  expert guidance and education on the effects of trauma, as well as evidence-based practices in recognizing and treating trauma.

Research indicates that there is a direct link between mental health and a child’s overall physical health. A child’s mental well-being is intrinsically connected to his or her life  outcomes. Moreover, the consequences of untreated trauma can have long term impacts for individuals and communities. Untreated child trauma survivors have higher absentee rates at school, are more likely to have long-term physical health problems, are retained in school more often, and are more likely to be arrested before graduating from high school. Early identification and treatment of trauma is paramount for improving the quality of life for the children and families in the Central Texas area.

Keynote speaker Dr. Dan Siegel is a clinical professor of psychiatry at the UCLA School of Medicine where he is on the faculty of the Center for Culture, Brain, and  Development and the founding co-director of the Mindful Awareness Research Center. He is an award-winning educator and author of numerous articles and books in the field of  interpersonal neurobiology. Breakout sessions will take place the second day of the  conference and cover topics including best practices and interventions that can be utilized by professionals from a variety of disciplines.

The Cross-Discipline Trauma Conference of Texas is provided by Austin Child Guidance Center through generous support of St. David’s Foundation.
